WELCOME TO THE WEB HUB OF GREEN MOUNTAIN WATER ENVIRONMENT ASSOCIATION!
GMWEA initiated Water Quality Day in 2014 to remind Vermonters of the crucial role that drinking water, wastewater, and stormwater management plays in their way of life -- and to honor the boots-on-the-ground professionals who make the miracle happen 24/7/365. It has been proclaimed as a day of observance every year since then by Vermont's governors, and celebrated with facility tours and public outreach activities statewide.
Water Quality Day 2019 was the biggest ever, with 19 facilities in every corner of Vermont holding open houses and tours. Hundreds of K - 12 students, legislators, state agency staff, educators, and the general public attended to get a first-hand look at the technology and meet the professionals who keep the taps running and the toilets flushing.
In 2020, however, due to COVID-19 restrictions, facilities could not open to the public. Ironically, the pandemic made us more aware than ever of the role of clean water. The devotion and discipline of our water quality professionals is being demonstrated every day: In some Vermont towns, water and wastewater workers have sheltered in place at their facilities to assure uninterrupted services to homes, hospitals, and public institutions.
Water Quality Day activities will commence again in May of 2021. We urge Vermonters to take a moment to appreciate the commitment of these public servants and the vast, complex infrastructure they operate on our behalf!
Facility tours are fun, fascinating, and educational. As one visitor put it: "It was mind-boggling! I had no idea all this was going on just to give me water. And right here in my own town!"
